Not a scheduled brunch or a weekend binge of Netflix’s latest series. Outside each cabin are picnic table and firepits with firewood and firestarters available for purchase. Inside are kitchenettes with two-burner stoves, sinks, cookware, cutting boards, tea kettles, cooking and eating utensils, and plates, cups, and bowls.

In each cabin is the option to buy a s’mores kit, coffee and tea, and insect wipes. You’ll have the opportunity to add additional meal and snack provisions to your reservation with our Sustenance Box for $35 at any time before or during your stay. My goal is to curate a space that interconnects my love for travel and transparency and I hope you will join me on that journey. Being Christina Jane is my way of inviting you to join me on my travel ventures by sharing the knowledge gained from my adventures and experiences— both good and bad. I have Visible by Verizon and always had signal while staying at the cabin. There was WiFi at the Gilchrist Springs location that worked very well during my time there.

Plus, there’s a small park and drinking fountain just for pups. I love that Getaway encourages creativity alongside rest in nature. After stepping away from my routine and carving out time, I was able to return to my work in a healthier and more intentional way.

While many confuse a stay at a Getaway House with glamping, I don’t consider it a glamping experience. While there are parallels, it’s more akin to renting a beautiful modern cabin in nature…that happens to be tiny. The cabins do not have WiFi, and cell service reception is either nonexistent or patchy, depending on which location you visit.

Hi, we’re Christina and Brad, Idaho based writers and photographers who live to explore. We did a short stint of traveling full time with our two year old and discovered we're much happier as part time nomads. We love helping fellow parents and everyday adventurers discover new places and experiences. If you’re curious about trying out a Getaway House, I highly recommend it. It’s the perfect retreat for a city dweller who needs something easy to get to and requires very little from you other than some clothes and a good book. Our four-year-old was the perfect age for the bunk bed since he could climb up and down independently, and we were reasonably confident he wouldn’t fall over the side.

I’m not much of a camping girl, so Getaway is the perfect escape to get a taste of the camping, outdoor nature vibe without going completely raw into it lol. Getaway just asks that you try to clean up by washing anything you used to help the team prepare for the next guests and leave your trash under the sink. You can bring your dog(s) with you to your Getaway experience. You can request an accessible room when booking your stay. Getaway claims to be available “all day, every day” through a phone number they provide you with once you book via text or call.

Getaway House is a collective of small cabins scattered around the United States. Each collective site, known as an Outpost, is located within two hours of driving from a major city. The idea is that Getaway House offers a no-hassle outdoor adventure and a departure from everyday life without all the planning involved. Set in Columbiaville, MI, about 1 hour from Detroit, our Outpost is named after the region and offers a true, up-north woodland feel. The expansive site offers several nature trails, which wind through towering old-growth trees, around serene wetlands, and along the river.

What to Expect

Use this link to find your nearest Getaway House location. I’ve always assumed that a camping trip wouldn’t be complete without s’mores. Fortunately, s’mores kits were readily available inside the cabin. The intimidating part was figuring out how to create a bonfire. There were directions inside, apparently, which I missed — but we made do by making the tiniest fire ever. It may not have been up to the standards of a s’moresologist, but marshmallows got roasted, and we crushed a few s’mores.

I mean, the cabin is self-check-in and check-out, so there likely won’t be anyone scolding you if you go over the limit, but it is not advised. You should have everything you need inside your cabin, but in case of an emergency, you can contact a team member throughout your stay. At Kanapaha, you can explore over 68 acres of various plant collections, including bamboo gardens, herb gardens, and water gardens. The garden has walking trails, a butterfly garden, and a gift shop. Ginnie Springs is a popular natural spring known for its crystal-clear blue water and the several activities to do at the property. Covering over 200 acres, Ginnie has a river, underwater caves for scuba diving, kayaking, bathhouses, and more.

However, there was a 6-inch gap between the mattress and the large picture window that a kid could roll into when sleeping, so we pushed the mattress to the window to prevent that. If you travel with young toddlers (1-3) who walk and love to climb, you might have some trouble if you book the bunk bed cabin. Our son loved staying at the tiny cabin and had an absolute blast climbing up and down the ladder and playing with his toys on the top bunk. I was a bit surprised by how much he loved staying at the cabin, but when I thought about why he loved it so much, I realized the cabin felt like a fun treehouse to him.

Typically the cabins accommodate two to four guests,  feature a queen bed (or bunk beds), a kitchenette with a stove and refrigerator, a private bathroom with a shower, and a dining area. Getaway cabins are designed to minimise distractions, encouraging guests to immerse themselves in the natural environment. They are not your standard holiday cabins but are purpose built dens of peace on carefully curated ‘outposts’ where you are guaranteed a real, deep, digital detox. And, while the Getaway House cabins are designed to feel remote, each Outpost has onsite (though pretty well hidden) staff at your service.

The beds are incredibly comfortable and you have literally every amenity you might need for a weekend away. I thought I might be left for wanting at some point during my weekend, but I never was. I had everything I needed, and then some (hello sleepytime tea, s’mores, bluetooth speaker, cooking utensils, pourover coffee!). The area is simply beautiful, and it’s part of the San Bernardino National Forest. I love it here because you can get wrapped up in the forest solitude while being treated to the epic views of the San Bernardino Mountains. Getaway House currently has 19 locations and counting in the United States, and my experience took place in Big Bear, at Getaway House Los Angeles.
